Last Thursday (5/14/26), 9 days ago, I noticed one of my ewes, Colby, acting a little off. She was moving slower than usual.
On Friday (5/15/26) she didn’t eat pellets and I got concerned. I was concerned she might be carrying triplets or quadruplets. I gave her a little Nutri-drench.
On Saturday (5/16/26) she went laid down and I couldn’t get her to stand, I gave her more Nutri-drench and calcium. I contacted the veterinarian, the ewe’s temperature was normal. After a few hours she was back on her feet, she still didn’t have much of an appetite.
Sunday (5/17/26) I got her some banamine (NSAID) and different hay. I also put her in a pen were I could keep a better eye on her.
Monday (5/18/26) and Tuesday (5/19/26) she was still acting off, and was not eating much. I was in contact with the vet’s office on and off. She stayed standing and was fairly alert.
Wednesday (5/20/26) early in the morning Colby laid down again and I couldn’t get her up. I contacted vet, and ran a urine sample to them. She had pregnancy toxemia. We spoke about terminating her pregnancy later in the day if she didn’t improve. All day I tried to get her to eat and did my best to take care of her, hoping that she would get back on her feet again before the vet got there. I was able to get her to eat a few dandelions, and administered Nutri-drench and propylene glycol. It was not enough to get her back on her feet. It had been 135 days since she had been put in with the ram, her babies would not be viable yet. The vet and I talked it over and ultimately chose to terminate her pregnancy in the evening in hopes of saving her life.
Thursday (5/21/26) I gave her propylene glycol and Nutri-drench throughout the day. I got her to eat a little bit on and off during the day mainly by shoving food into her mouth.
Friday (5/22/26) In the evening she went into labor, the first lamb was not presented correctly. I went in and moved it around and pulled it out. She was struggling to push and I ended up pulling 3 more lambs out. All weighed around 4 pounds. I didn’t feel any more lambs so I left her to pass the placenta.
Saturday (5/23/26) I went out to check on her, at first I thought she had passed placenta. I went to move it and it was actually another lamb. I gloved up and went back inside her. There was a 6th lamb. I really struggled to pull the 6th. I called vet for help and she told me to pull. I was finally able to get it out.
Now I am waiting for her to pass the placenta and I am really hoping she pulls through.
