My favorite onion to grow because it puts in the work from planting itself to helping deter pests from other garden plants!
4 things I absolutely love about this onion-

Taste
The entire plant is edible! I use the green tops regularly in omelets, and loaded nachos. I use the bulbs in soups. In the past seasons where I never got around to planting red, yellow, or white onions I’ve used walking onions in their place in recipes to save money on the grocery bill. The dishes still tasted great to me but I’m not too picky when it comes to food that nourishes the body.

Perennial
They come back year after year! One of my favorite things is that here in Michigan I am able to harvest these onion plants most of the year as well. The greens stay green into the winter and I can harvest the underground bulbs as long as the ground is not frozen.

Easy to Propagate
If you’ve also fallen in love with this onion and you want more? Good news! They are a breeze to propagate. In the fall after they produce little bunches of bulbs on their tops, you can take and plant those little bulbs (if the plant hasn’t done so already.) Also when your onion gets big enough you can split the plant as well!

Companion Plant
Walking onions are great companion plants for many other garden plants. They aren’t aggressive and their scent can help deter pests from other garden plants. This year I plan to fill a bed with cucumbers, nasturtiums, oregano, and walking onions. Walking onions also pair well with many vegetables in the kitchen as well!
