Why I Got Sheep

Believe it or not, I did not want sheep. I wanted dairy goats. Unfortunately for me the fence the house came with was low and from my limited research goats are escape artists. I decided to start saving up for a new fence. I was dreaming about my future dairy goats while reading a book about cheese. It was in that book that I came across something I’d never heard of before, dairy sheep.

The existing fence and shelter would work for sheep and I could still get some milk while saving up for my goats. Early in 2020 I found a breeder and put my deposit down on 3 dairy sheep, 2 ewes and a ram.

Benefits of Sheep

Milk

I got sheep for milk. Ironically, I am 6 years in and I have not used my sheep for milk. I am still hopeful that I will have an opportunity to in the future. This year I have found that some of my girls are a true pleasure to milk.

Meat

Each year I’ve bred my ewes with hopes to milk them. Every year I’ve ended up with several ram lambs and no plans for them.
